A weekend dominated by luscious nature and the Elbe Marshes
Bobby Bräuer welcomes us with a wonderfully light meal of Spreewald crab and Havel pike-perch, crowned with rare wild turbot of the Baltic Sea. Hans von Trotha describes the garden through the ages and vividly explains how each epoch had its own concept of paradise, and what was done to realise the various visions.
On Saturday we walk through the glorious Dessau-Wörlitz forest with Dr. Thomas Weiss, Director of the Foundation for Culture in Dessau-Wörlitz. In his time Prince Franz created a precious hideaway gem here, now the ruins provide a romantic setting for the first glass of Roederer Champagne. We make our way along the Elbe to the rose meadow, where lunch is laid out. Turkey, quail, mange-tout and baby carrots give us the sustenance for the taxonomical ramble through the parks and gardens. Dr. Hans-Helmut Poppendieck explains the plant system of Linnaeus. Afterwards, we explore the rooms of contemplation inside the gothic house with Uwe Quilitzsch.
On Sunday everything revolves around vegetables. We listen to the English ‘Queen of Salads’ Joy Larkcom, a veritable expert on cultivating fruit, vegetable and herb gardens. We learn more about the art of pickling from Bobby Bräuer, later we cook and enjoy the grand finale together – cauliflower and crisp French beans, medallions of lamb, rainbow trout and cod with summer herbs, and sweetened peaches soaked in Riesling. |
