The oak as symbol of German Romanticism
We welcome autumn with our first game menu. Wild duck and young boar, pumpkins, Teltow turnips, nuts and bitter chocolate are the flavours of the evening. Hajo von Richthofen, owner of a collection of 700 oak trees, talks to us about his remarkable work. Hans von Trotha discusses German Romanticism in which religion, mysticism and nature return to fashion and the famous artist Caspar David Friedrich painted the oak as a symbol of the new era.
The trees in the parks and gardens surrounding Wörlitz are of particular interest to us on Saturday. The Manor House and its pavilions are famous for their oak, alder, pear or apple wood interiors. With Uwe Quilitzsch and an expert in international antiques we discover sumptuous occasional furniture from the early classical period, and flooring and wall panelling that still appears modern today. At lunch we enjoy Brandenburg venison with wild fruits in a sheltered spot. A walk with tree expert Günter Diamant follows, and we marvel at the rich variety of trees. The leaves are turning red and gold and the hint of cool winds sweeps from the treetops.
On Sunday we learn more about the wood in gardens with Günter, who talks in detail about care and cultivation, creating shapes, focal points and groves. Bobby Bräuer invites to a lesson about preserving rowan berries and wild quince. At lunch the aromas of capon with early Savoy cabbage, curd cheese soufflé and plum bread envelope the table. |
